OPULENCE

Will people continue to search for happiness and self-revelation in the consumption of material goods? We, including myself as a designer, often find ourselves falling victim to the glamour and appeal of opulence that is constantly presented in main stream media. Manipulated by various marketing ploys, society has become invested in displaying our status and wealth by flaunting luxury name-brand apparel, accessories and other tangible items. We have become corrupt fascinators of affluence. So much so, that we are completely blinded from the negative affects that this obsession of "displaying our wealth through tangible items" has on society and youth culture. Opulence is a parody collection that depicts the fashion industry’s influence on first-world consumerism by satirizing our obsession of luxury goods and precious materials- such as the adornment of diamonds, pearls and expensive fabrics.

This collection was created for the 34th annual Cornell Fashion Collective fashion runway show in March of 2018. All garments were patterned, cut, and sewn by Kaya Middleton (excluding basic undergarments-- although many were manipulated by adding original embellishments).
